The Merchants' Social Network: How Shopify Brands Send Each Other New Customers, With No Ad Spend

Commerce was the first social network. The bazaar, the market street, the shopkeeper who sends you to his neighbor's stall. For centuries merchants grew through each other: my buyers meet you, your buyers meet me, and both of us grow.
Then commerce moved online, and every store became an island. Meeting a new customer now usually means one thing: paying an ad platform for the introduction. Again and again, forever. Every Shopify brand knows the math: ads get more expensive every quarter, and the day you stop paying, the traffic stops.
Here is what most brands miss. Your cheapest new customer already exists. She just checked out of another store, one that shares your exact buyer and will never compete with you. Think a swimwear brand and a sunscreen brand. Until now there was no practical way for those two brands to send each other customers: it meant DMs, spreadsheets, untracked discount codes, and a payout someone had to chase.
AfterBye was built to fix exactly that. We call it the merchants' social network, and it opened its doors this month at afterbye.io.

What AfterBye actually is
A network where brands make their own matches. Your brand gets a profile. The network has a live feed. You see the other brands: who they are, what they sell, where they are, and what their real numbers look like. You find a brand that shares your customer, you propose, they approve. It is a match.
Signing up takes about two minutes, and you do not land in a dashboard: you land inside the feed, where the network pins one line for you: "You're in. Your first match is on its way."
From the moment two brands match, AfterBye takes over as the operator: the agreement, the placements, the tracking, the money. You make exactly two kinds of decisions: who to match with, and pause or continue. Everything else is handled. And if you would rather be found than search, AfterBye also proposes matches by hand: brands with your exact buyer and zero product overlap.
One principle governs the whole network: matched, not bid on. Partners are proposed by category and audience fit, never sold to the highest bidder. Nobody can pay their way onto your store.
How a partnership works, step by step
You make a match. Find a brand that fits in the network, or let AfterBye propose one: a brand with your buyer and zero product overlap, matched by category. A jewelry brand matches a skincare brand, never another jewelry brand.
Both sides approve. Nothing goes live until you both say yes. The agreement and the revenue terms are prepared for you, no lawyers, no back-and-forth.
The placements go live on both stores. After a customer completes payment on your partner's store, the thank-you page shows a few of your products. It loads after the payment, so it never touches checkout and has no impact on site speed. Your store does the same for them.

Then the money part, with real numbers. A customer pays for her swimsuit at your partner's store. On the thank-you page she sees your sunscreen and buys a $40 bottle. You ship it and keep $32 (80%). The store that showed it earns $4 (10%). AfterBye takes $4 (10%). The split runs automatically through Stripe, with no invoices, no chasing, and no monthly fee: if there are no sales, nobody pays anything.
A feed where nothing can be staged
The name is not a metaphor. AfterBye is built like a social network: profiles, matches, and a live feed. When two brands match, the network sees it. A first partner sale, a milestone, a new brand joining: each becomes a post. Merchants watch the network move, see who pairs well with whom, and find their next partner right in the flow. See a brand you like, and a partnership is two easy steps away: you propose, they approve.
And there is one thing no other feed can promise: nothing here can be staged. A post exists because the event actually happened in the data.
What you stay in control of
Every brand. You approve each partner before anything appears with your name, and you can pause, swap, or remove anyone with one toggle.
Your customers and your data. Buyers who come through the network become your customers, and your customer data stays yours.
Your reputation. Track records on AfterBye are counted, not claimed, so the partner you approve is exactly as good as their real numbers.
Retention and acquisition, stacked
Dondy readers already know the post-purchase moment is gold; using it well with your own customers is what great retention looks like. AfterBye points that same moment at a different problem: bringing you customers you never had, from stores that already earned their trust.
"Retention makes your existing customers worth more. The network brings you new ones without ad spend. They are not competing ideas. They stack," says Lir Aroyo, AfterBye's founder. "I am onboarding the first brands myself, on my personal WhatsApp. Early is the honest pitch."
Where it stands today
The network opened this month, and it is young on purpose: the first seats are open, and the brands that join now get first pick of partners and a real say in what gets built next. Setup takes a couple of minutes: create your profile, connect your store, approve your first match.
